● No law in place, Telangana tops chart for trespass cases
Repealing the Land Grabbing (prohibition) Act may not have been a good move on the
part of government as the state has seen the highest number of criminal trespass cases
recorded. The recently released National Crime Records Busreau (NCRB) 2017 shows
that Telangana police has recorded as many as 4,558 criminal trespass cases.
Interestingly, Uttar Pradesh, which has around six times the population has 4,225 cases.
A criminal trespass case is booked when an accused enters the property of the
complainant with a criminal intention of either to occupy or to cause harm or loss to the
legal occupants.
On June 1, 2016, the state government had repealed the 1982 Act through a
government order (GO) stating that the act was not serving its purpose.
