- Telangana government planning a policy for beggars’ rehabilitation
- Telangana government is contemplating a ‘beggars rehabilitation and resettlement policy’ soon. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and police would play a major role in the policy. Home and municipal administration departments have started working on the policy and were asked to suggest rehabilitation measures for beggars.
- Telangana government began focussing on the beggar menace in October last year just before the Global Entrepreneurship Summit.
- Beggars at various junctions were picked up and male beggars were put up in the old observation home for boys behind Chanchalguda Jail while female beggars were housed in a building adjacent to Charlapally central prison in Medchal.
- Buoyed with the success of tackling beggars, the prisons and correctional services department had proposed opening rehabilitation centres in all districts. It also proposed to procure vehicles and provide other facilities at the centre. The proposal was sent to the home department for earmarking the budget and permission to recruit personnel. But the state government turned down the proposal on the grounds that keeping them in jails cannot be a permanent solution and instead asked the police to come up with a long-term strategy, which has now turned out to be the beggars rehabilitation and resettlement policy.
